On Wednesday we were in Rome as Global Goodwill Ambassadors for FAO, committed to using sport to support a better, more equitable world around food and sustainability.
By Keith Dawkins
This work created an unbelievable opportunity to meet Pope Leo XIV.
I was able to convey to Pope Leo that the Harlem Globetrotters and FAO…share a common mission to promote dignity, inclusion, and hope, especially for young people, and that I believe that he shared that purpose to which he responded “Amen!”
(Yes I almost lost my breath!)
The crowd roared when the ball spun on his finger. He talked about remembering seeing Sweet Lou Dunbar (aka Coach Lou) play in Chicago. We gave him an official jersey. What a moment! The Harlem Globetrotters are unrivaled as a sports organization in our ability to create emotion, engage global audiences and create long lasting impact on, and OFF, the court. What an honor it is to associated with this remarkable phenomenon.
