Campaign has announced the best American ad of the 21st century.
It’s been a long ride, hasn’t it?
We announced the arrival of the Campaign Cup — the March Madness-esque advertising bracket to determine the greatest American ad of the 21st century — all the way back in early March.
But now it’s time to crown a winner.
Let’s give a recap: 16 ads duked it out with 16 other ads, all put into four different categories (CPG, Brand Characters, Auto & Insurance and Purpose). Throughout the five rounds, some well-beloved spots were left in the dust (looking at you, Ted Lasso and Jake from State Farm), while spots made by agencies BBDO and Wieden+Kennedy dominated the bracket.
In the end, two contestants remained: Snickers and BBDO New York’s Betty White (2010) and Jeep and Highdive’s Groundhog Day (2020). Both spots played into nostalgic characters — Betty White’s Rose Nylund in the sitcom Golden Girls (1985-1992) and Bill Murray’s Phil Connors in the movie Groundhog Day (1993).
and the winner is!
