Angry Birds Flocks to the Big Screen Again

Angry Birds is developing a third animated film and seeks new licensing partners to build a range of products and experiences that extend the story beyond the screen.

Angry Birds has fascinated and enchanted people of all ages since it landed in Apple’s App Store in 2009. Many people claimed the game’s initial success was just ‘lucky’ since the original iPhone’s release was just two years prior to the game’s launch, and the App Store made downloading and purchasing games literally as easy as tapping a phone screen – and that very much could be true. However, those elements only got the game into people’s hands. The adorable, perpetually grumpy birds, satisfying gameplay and game design magic from Jaakko Iisalo is what kept people coming back to play 'just one more level.' Fast forward to 2025, Angry Birds has evolved from a mobile game into a unified transmedia franchise spanning 16 successful years, encompassing blockbuster movies, an extensive merchandise ecosystem, collectible items, plush toys, location-based entertainment attractions and much more.

To add to the empire, Rovio – intellectual property (IP) owner of Angry Birds – is working alongside Prime Focus Studios, in partnership with Flywheel Media, One Cool Group and Dentsu on the upcoming animated film, “The Angry Birds Movie 3.” This film is set to be released on January 29, 2027 by Paramount Pictures with an all-star ensemble of comedic talent.

“While we’re keeping the plot under wraps for now, we can confirm the return of beloved characters like Red, voiced by Jason Sudeikis; Chuck, voiced by Josh Gad; Silver, voiced by Rachel Bloom and Bomb, voiced by Danny McBride,” says Katri Chacona, head of brand licensing, Rovio Entertainment. “We’re also thrilled to announce an amazing roster of new voice talent joining the cast, including Emma Myers, Keke Palmer, Tim Robinson, Lily James, Marcello Hernandez and so many more.

The first “Angry Birds Movie” was an unexpected hit when it landed in theaters in 2016, bringing home $352.3 million at the global box office. It also reached the number one spot in over 50 countries in its opening weekend – the only movie based on a mobile game ever to accomplish such a high-flying feat. “The Angry Birds Movie 2” continued the first movie’s success in 2019 and remains one of the highest rated video game movies as reported by Rotten Tomatoes.

This year animated films have been doing well in the global box office and represent a significant portion of top-performing movies. For instance, according to the New York Times, “Ne Zha 2” made $2.2 billion, which is more than any other animated film when not accounting for inflation. Video game–to–movie adaptations also continue to do well with audiences, with "The Minecraft Movie” earning approximately $955 million and "Sonic the Hedgehog 3” generating about $492 million. Therefore, with the past success of the Angry Birds movies combined with the current demand for animated films and video game adaptations, one can reasonably predict that “The Angry Birds Movie 3” will flourish and become another box office hit.

To enhance the excitement for the movie, people can expect vibrant marketing campaigns, in-game collaborations, activations and promotional programs. Rovio is developing the movie’s licensing program with IMG Licensing, and there is a roster of partners already in place, including The Loyal Subjects, Bioworld International, Golden Link, TCC, Blues Group, Komar Kids, Jittery Kit, Buzz Bee Toys and more, that will help transform the film into an everyday 360° experience.

“We are pleased to welcome the Angry Birds into our unrivalled gaming portfolio,” says Richard Radford, international lead of licensing, Bioworld. “With its fun gameplay and characters, it has enduring appeal for millions of players worldwide, who will love the apparel and accessories collections that we are currently developing. This exciting partnership comes at the perfect time for us to slingshot into the franchise’s next chapter, as anticipation builds for the forthcoming movie.”

RMS International will also be working with Rovio to create thoughtfully crafted products that align with the Angry Birds’ playful spirit.

“This nostalgic brand is a perfect addition to RMS’ portfolio, offering a dynamic blend of energy, fun and endless creativity,” says Rebecca Law, head of licensed product, RMS International. “The partnership marks the launch of RMS’ exciting new product range, designed to bring the Angry Birds magic to life, ensuring an authentic experience for fans of all ages.”

The Loyal Subjects will be the master toy partner for “The Angry Birds Movie 3” and will release a suite of toys, collectibles and plushes designed for both kids and adult fans. Rovio does remain open to additional licensing initiatives and partners that will bring fresh ideas to the table and align with the Angry Birds’ values and universe.

“You might be surprised at what kind of unique partnerships can be a good fit for Angry Birds,” says Chacona. “We’ve worked with a hugely diverse range of partners in the past, including banks, insurance companies, food and beverage, toys, apparel, car brands, educational initiatives, sports and music! The key for us is finding a natural fit, whether it's through storytelling alignment, a shared brand DNA or even a connection to our core gameplay mechanics like the slingshot.”

A good example of a ‘natural’ fit is the award-winning Legends of Learning x Angry Birds collaboration. Legends of Learning (an educational platform for students in grades K-8) brought a familiar IP (Angry Birds) to educational-based games, helping students stay engaged while learning physics, math and science. Another natural partnership was with SEA LIFE. This immersive event, held at SEA LIFE locations, used an Angry Birds-themed interactive trail to teach children about threats facing marine life, how to protect the ocean and sea animals and awarded guests a certificate upon completion.
